This isn’t another article on how to create the perfect, personalized mittens for everyone on your party list, nor is it about pretending not to stress you out while I set impossibly high standards for finding the “perfect” gift for everyone on your list. It’s a new way of sizing up your gift recipients so you can find something that will appeal to them and get you remembered as someone who went the extra mile without going crazy.
You’re going to go shopping by hand. Look at the hands of the people you’ll be shopping for and pull out the handy cheat sheet to get your shopping done. It doesn’t matter if you insist on shopping every single little store in your neighborhood (buying local is great!) or if you’re going to sit down and finish all your shopping with the help of your laptop and wifi – using hands as guides, you’re going to find something appealing and memorable for everyone on your list.
Look at their hands. Some things to take notice of:
1) Their gestures (some people can’t seem to talk without using their hands – others are less active); how often they present their hands or make their hands available (some people have their hands out on the table or in plain sight all the time, others keep them in pockets or on their lap);
2) Their hand-size –in respect to their overall size – sometimes it seems like the hands don’t match.
3) Their palm’s color – if you’re able to observe their palms which of the following colors seems most “like” theirs? Red (maybe in spots or the whole palm and even the finger tips); Blue (usually in the middle of the palm or between the thumb and the first finger – the hand may seem translucent to you); Yellow (the palm may be calloused or thick looking to you and seem more beige than you expected).
4) Their hand shape. If you had to classify them, would you be able to say if their hands were more square, rectangular or round?
5) Anything else that seems to jump out at you – maybe a finger is crooked or very large (or small). Perhaps their palmsseem really ruddy or red. Maybe their hands seem very long and slender or short and padded. Do they have a dimple on the bottom of the palm? Do the fingers seem very long on a really small palm?
If you don’t have the opportunity to look at someone’s hands in person – pull out a few pictures of them and see what you notice about their hands in pictures (if they’re on Facebook, this is a great place to review their pictures!)
Go with your gut impression and put together the information in a way that makes sense to you. You may not be able to notice or answer all the questions listed above – no worries.Use what you’ve found and move on. (For those of you that like to fill out forms – email me (

) and I’ll send you a form that you can use for each of your gift recipients.
Now take the information above (or from your form) and use the guide below to find a gift that will be most appealing to your recipient!
Talk with their hands? Some great gift ideas are apps for their cell phone; books on local activities in their area; tickets to a local event with you and a group of their friends; a manicure day with you.
Hide Their Hands? They’d love a blank book or journal with a special pen.
Rectangular hand or yellowish palm? They’d love passes for an adult education class (First Class in DC is a great place to look). They’d also appreciate books on history, abstract ideas or philosophy.
Square palm/Thick Hand & Fingers? Look for books on earth sciences, science fiction, gardening, animals, ecology or crafting (or an item to assist them in pursuit of any of these).
Small hand/Reddish Color/Tons of Lines? Think about something that they can display in their home in their favorite color; Gift certificates for yoga classes; books on travel, networking or famous leaders in their field.
Long palm&/or fingers that seem willowy/Bluish coloring? They’d enjoy cookbooks for celebrations; yoga gift certificates, meditation classes or books on meditation; a journal with lovely pen; or novels about real people making real-life changing connections.
Enjoy your holiday season – and take every opportunity you can to say hello and smile, connect with someone new and find time and space to breathe as you review the year 2009 and plan for 2010.
