Tri-County Feeds, Etc. – A One in a Million Store

Let me start off just saying that “This Place Rocks!”

Tri-County Feeds, Etc. (TCFE) is located just outside of Marshall, VA and is very conveniently located adjacent to the Fauquier Livestock Exchange. So….you can buy a horse and walk him next door and garner your tack, feed and riding togs all in a one-stop shop. But that’s definitely not all that is offered – the Etc. part of the name is where the real fun comes in.

A bit of history: In 1978 Bill Jackson began selling horse bedding to local farms out of the back of his pickup truck.  Realizing that customers who needed bedding also needed other products led Bill to open their 700-square foot retail location in 1980.  As the business grew, Bill purchased the building across the street and rented warehouse space nearby.  He continued to expand his product offerings to remain abreast of his customers’ demands.  It soon became evident that getting everything under one roof was essential.  The plans for the new Tri-County Feeds, Etc. were born.  In the new 24,000 square foot store and warehouse facility, Bill and his lovely wife, Jeri, have over seen the evolution of TCFE from a one pick-up truck operation into a complete shopping destination.

About the Etc.: Being a girl from Wyoming and someone who appreciates a good pair of Cowboy boots, I was in heaven when I saw the selection they have. Luchesse  and Ariat are just two of the brands that they carry and I mention them because they are my favorite. The selection of riding and casual attire, jewelry and accessories (great hand bags) in addition to some very unique gifts and fabulous local artwork are rounded out with a very impressive line of home décor items. There isn’t anything in this store that is “run-of-the-mill”.

TCFE carries an extensive collection of horse and pet products. Since they are located in “horse country”, it’s obvious that they have everything that one would possibly want for their equine friends but that also means there are lots of items – including food, treats, toys, etc.- for the canine faction. In fact, they even have a section for the felines in the family.

The décor and the layout of the facility is fabulous. It is open and unpretentious  but very warm and welcoming at the same time. This is also a good way to describe the Jacksons. Bill and Jeri are a delight to talk to and are very dedicated to making TCFE a top-notch destination. They are also very dedicated to the environment as well. When designing the new space, they made the decision to incorporate as many “green” aspects into their new facility as feasible.  These aspects include bamboo and cork flooring, recycled fiber carpet, earth-friendly insulation, non-petroleum based paints, stains, and sealers, and an energy efficient HVAC system. The store carries many natural, eco-friendly products and clothing lines and everyone adheres to an avid recycling program.

In addition, the Jacksons are very community oriented. They provide their conference room on the 2nd floor to local groups for meetings and workshops at no cost. This room isn’t just an extra room in the building. It has a kitchenette and all of the bells and whistles needed for a top-drawer audio/visual presentation. Bill and Jeri also believe in shopping locally. They are big supporters of the 3/50 Project, which is a group that promotes stronger local economies through support of independent retailers and the consumers who shop with them. Describing exactly what the project does would entail a whole other feature article. It is worth your while to check out their website at 350project.net for full details.

Coming new to TCFE this month is a coffee shop cleverly named “Jackson Whole Bean”. When Jeri told me about the new addition, I immediately thought of Jackson Hole, WY but now as I write this, I do believe the referral is to their last name!! At any rate, it’s a great name!! Please watch their website for updates on the shop. This is just another great idea for this destination store and I’ll bet it isn’t the last.

I strongly suggest that you all take a drive to the intersection of John Marshall Highway (Route 55) and Zulla Road in the near future and check out this place. You will be glad that you did!! I will also bet that it won’t be the last trip you make to the TCFE.

TCFE is open 7 days a week.
