April 2010

Well, it looks like spring might stay for a while.  I was beginning to wonder…warm day, then a cold one again.  The snow this past season has surely hurt restaurants, retail and the Virginia Wineries that decided to remain open on weekends.  The trickle down effect has had an impact on all of us resulting in loss of revenue.  This has made a tough time even tougher.  But with the arrival of warm weather, I have noticed a huge resurgence of foot traffic in Old Town, Alexandria, as well as the other Old Town’s in our region.  Cure your cabin fever with a day or night on the town.

This months’ day trip is a short drive to Old Town, Manassas.  Travel the back roads through Clifton or take Route 28 – this route slices right through the town.

April showers bring May flowers; until then, the time is right to visit The Enchanted Florist, this months’ Business Profile.  Speaking of flowers, our Personality Profile can be seen peering through the foliage on our cover…Mike McGrath, the Garden Guru…see how he got his start.  And thanks to Frances Killpatrick for helping to make the article readable.

The island of St. John just got a little bit more crowed with the birth March 16th of Audie Benjamin Weaver.  This 8 pound 2 ounce future world-class sailor was born to my friends Doug and Clare Weaver, former owners of Donkey Diner.  Speaking of the islands, with warm weather coming the rates are falling.  It is a great time to hit the beach and enjoy the clear water of the USVI.  Former Alexandrian, Claire Lamborne owner of Claire’s at the Depot restaurant in Warrenton was just there visiting Foxy on Jost Van Dyke…check out the Caribbean Connection.

Check out Cooking, Fran and Wally and see what Chef Tracy O’Grady of Willow fame has been up to.

Make sure that you catch the Gigs & Digs guys second half of the article on local legend Billy Hancock.  If you missed the first part last month, you can find it at oldtowncrier.com.

Bring on the sunshine!
