Publisher’s Notes…June 2010

We are now crossing over the shoulder from spring to summer.  The weather is still somewhat undecided, however whether (no pun intended) it is warm or cool, we have your getaway.  If it is a hot day, take a beautiful drive to Jefferson County, WV and enjoy the Harpers Ferry Outdoor Festival and Tim Gavin Down River Race.  The waters of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers promise to be cool and refreshing.  If the weather turns cool, book a flight to the US Virgin Islands and visit St. John or St. Thomas.  Jaime Elliot writes about celebrating a Pirates Wedding in the Islands.  Speaking of Pirates, this month’s day trip is Fell’s Point in Baltimore where they just celebrated their annual Privateer Day this past April.

This month’s personality profile highlights long time local Alexandrian, Norman Hatch.  Norm is most noted for his military filming of first time shots of World War II, however I discovered a few more of his interests that will make his life worth reading about.

For those of you who spend time enjoying our spectacular wine and hunt country, we are selecting a few “destination restaurants” that deserve your attention. Neil Williamson has been bringing you insight into a different winery every month, but don’t miss winemaker Doug Fabbioli’s column revealing what it takes to be successful in the business.

I would also like to acknowledge Ryan Unverzagt’s (From the Trainer) kind words of thanks in last months issue. The fact of the matter is that we get the best part of the deal…his articles are not just cutting edge, but they simply make us a better publication…and that is what makes print media worthwhile.

On a sad note, I miss my friend, Bob Adams, who passed away last month. I met Bob since in 1973 - way before Alexandria, Virginia.  He was in the printing business and always had good things to say about what we were doing with the Old Town Crier.  He, like many others, initially thought that we would not succeed, however, in later years he always had an encouraging comment to make about what we were doing.  His smile,  “hey pardner”, and guidance will be missed.

Happy Father’s Day from all of us here at the Crier!

In Town Tip of the Month:  When was the last time you went to the Morrison House? Well it is time to go back.  The rooms are a great getaway from your everyday routine (and they treat you like royalty), and the Grille Room is a great “manly” kind of place to take Dad for Father’s Day.  Also check out the piano bar every Tuesday through Saturday nights.
