In order to be awesome you must be memorable.
Being memorable is scary stuff. I mean, people have to take notice of you in order to be memorable.
Being memorable strikes fear in a lot of good hearts. People who want to make a big difference focus on that that – and say “it doesn’t matter if they remember me, I want them to remember the message, or the work or …whatever.”
Guess what? You are the messenger for a very specific message and you have the exact language – the exact DNA and the exact phraseology necessary to reach specific people who have to hear the message you have to deliver. So, you don’t have to be memorable to everyone, you only have to be memorable to those people who most need your message.
Memorable is when someone hears about a talk you’re giving and they say “I HAVE to get to that event – that girl really hits it out of the park whenever she talks about fly fishing!”
Nuance baby. You are memorable because you’re on purpose. You are living your purpose, you’re speaking your purpose and you are driven to stick to your purpose in each and every interaction you have. You also know your purpose is the underlying part of your essence – your DNA – it’s not the color of your eyes or the clothes you’re wearing.
I’m memorable. Even though the only time this occurs to me is when someone I think of as way-cooler-than-me comes up to me and tells me that they remember me.
Whenever I’m most feeling out of my element or insecure at a big-name, big-money event I look around, desperately for a familiar face. And I see them. Tons of familiar faces as a matter of fact. They. Are. All. So. Much. More. Accomplished. Than. .I. Am. They are wise and witty and popular. And I shrink my way back to the bar at the event. That’s when someone I admire for their work ends up behind me and I turn to introduce myself. “I remember you! You’re the one who wrote that great comment about how my pinkies might be holding me back on my blog post last winter,” she says.
That’s when I’m reminded I’m memorable.
You still think you need more (or less) of something to be memorable – or that you had to be born that way? I’m here to say you can hone your memorability. (yes, I made it up, it’s another thing people remember about me – how I make words up).
Here’s how:
Focus on your purpose. My purpose lights my passion. Passion is one of my 4 defining words so being on purpose (with passion) naturally lights me up from within. Passion may not be your defining word – not to worry - -just focus on your purpose and the definition of you will be fully present.(*)
Define your memorable message. This isn’t your marketing message (although it could certainly play into that) – this is he BIG message that comes up and out when you know you’re on purpose. This is more like the Memorable THEME of your life rather than the defining paragraph. What do you want to be remembered for? How do you want your message to come across? This isn’t your tag-line it’s your overall way of showing up in life. Me? I want to be remembered for being passionate and fun while empowering people to live big, loud, no-excuses lives of joyful, honest service.
Be yourself. When you want to create your memorable factor, go back to your memorable message, add in a bit of personal flair and mix with compassion for yourself. Your flair may be the color you always wear, or the fact that you have a seatbelt for an actual belt. If it’s you and adds to your memoribility without deflecting your message – go fort it.
Connect with other people whom you find memorable. Read and comment on blogs, go to the networking events that they attend and get to know them. Observe what draws you to them and how they reach out to you (and others like you). Find ways to collaborate or work them to fine-tune your message and learn the ropes by emulating them.
Being memorable is an important step on your journey to changing the world. Don’t worry about your ego or your worthiness. You are meant to be memorable. And when you are, the people who need you and who want what you have to offer are not only going to remember you, but they’re going to join you in your journey. Now that’s awesome!
