Whew has it been hot out or what?? Hopefully August will prove to be a “cool” month in comparison!! We are taking a little different approach to the Business Profile this month in that we are going to feature several of Old Town’s finest establishments at once. We are in hopes that you will want to visit all of them and soak in a few minutes of air conditioning while you shop!!
Let’s start at the upper end of King and Street and work our way down toward the waterfront!
Goldworks, at the corner of King and West Streets, has been in this spot since 1990! A long time advertiser and friend, Jewelry designer David Martin remains the primary force at the shop and has a very diverse background from medical illustration to sculpture.
David’s expertise is creating fine jewelry (primarily wedding sets), salvaging old pieces, or redesigning them by adding his own touch. He says, “I make things work for people and that is what it's all about."
Gold Works carries beautiful sought-after name brands and supplies the finest cut and polished diamonds and precious stones available. They are very proud of the high quality they maintain in both inventory and customer service.
Imagine Artwear, located just a few blocks down from Goldworks at 1124 King Street, is owned and operated by Carol Supplee. Carol is also a long time advertiser and good friend. Carol has an incredible eye for form and function that is evident in the inventory in her store. In fact, it classifies as a gallery on several levels as well as a clothing and accessory store.
Imagine showcases the best in contemporary American crafts and sells sophisticated clothing, jewelry and accessories made exclusively by American artists. Imagine is a gallery dedicated to displaying the talents of weavers, painters, surface designers, jewelers, potters, glass artists, and furniture makers.
Serving its community since 1988, Imagine Artwear has attracted an international audience to its doors. Imagine is literally a craft fair happening year round.
Ten Thousand Villages, located at 915 King Street, boasts the motto “Creative inspiration from reclaimed finds!” And if you have never ventured in to the store, you are certainly missing out. This excerpt from their website tells it all: “Picture the “room of my own” from your dreams, an eclectic jumble of objects to delight and inspire. A feast for the eyes, heart and spirit—this collection brings new life to time-honored folkloric design, as well as revived purpose to cast-off scraps.”
Ten Thousand Villages has been Northern Virginia's Fair Trade destination since 1994 and they are part of one of the oldest and largest fair trade organizations in the world. Ten Thousand Villages has 60 years of experience as a global network of social entrepreneurs working to empower and provide economic opportunities to artisans in developing countries.
The Silver Parrot, located at 113 King Street has been a fixture in Old Town for over 25 years. This store has some of the most unique sterling silver jewelry in the area. If you are like I am, a huge silver and turquoise fan, this place is like nirvana for people like us.
The jewelry in this store is handcrafted by 30 different designers from a variety of countries including Indonesia, Nepal, Mexico, Turkey, China, India, the Native American Nations, and the United States. The website boasts “We have designs to satisfy every style and budget. From contemporary and modern to ethnic and ancient, we have the widest selection of sterling silver jewelry in our region. If you are looking for something unique and have not found it on our website, give us a call and we may have it at our store.”
Summertime Sizzles all over Old Town! Please take time to stop in at our other fine advertisers - King’s Jewelry, The Nugget, Christmas Attic, Gossypia and Izalia.
