In Dr. Smith’s statement, the 21 artists selected for this exhibition enhance our understanding of the vulnerabilities, dilemmas and strengths of the flesh by reflecting our humanity in their art.

"A dish of Tea to cheer me": A Tea Tasting & Lecture

The Carlyle House Historic Park and the Spice & Tea Exchange of Alexandria will be presenting a tea tasting on the Magnolia Terrace of Carlyle House. This program will include a short historical overview of tea practices in the 18th-century as well as a full tasting of various teas. The tea tasting will provide an overview of: the different types of tea, including white, green, oolong, black, and herbal, among others - the characteristics of tea and what drives the differences in tea type, taste, and properties - a demonstration of proper preparation and tasting of each - a Q&A session including discussion of afternoon tea and etiquette. Participants will also receive a discount in both the Museum Gift Shop and at the Spice & Tea Exchange of Alexandria. Admission for this event is $15. “Appropriating scientific diagrams that explain natural phenomenon functions both as a ‘ready-made’ choice of color palette and as a form of non-traditional landscape painting through the use of symbolism. Gerre Hancock will be our organist at 5:00 PM at the June 5 Hymnfest. Dr. Hancock is among the world’s most respected church musicians. Our hymn festival will feature a variety of hymns of different styles (from Liber Usualis to LEVAS). The Christ Church choirs will be joined by the choirs from St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Arlington and the Church of the Redeemer in Bethesda. Rothman will discuss the topic of slave emancipation, an issue that he addressed in his 2005 book, Slave Country: American Expansion and the Origins of the Deep South, published by Harvard University Press.
