Historic Mount Vernon hosts a special new exhibition, "George Washington & His Generals." For the first time, a collection of over 120 paintings, personal artifacts and manuscripts associated with the generals of the Continental and French armies who served under George Washington will be on display.

The National Treasure Tour combines Hollywood and history, giving visitors stories about the filming and also information on how the behind-the-scenes locations were used during George Washington's time. Included in this approximately hour-long walking tour is the Mansion's basement and cornerstone, the setting for a pivotal scene in the movie. The National Treasure Tours are offered at the following times: 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m.

Worn by a 17-year-old girl to her 1747 wedding…restyled and re-worn again and again until, finally, cut into dozens of pieces and given to that young girl's descendants. Come learn the story of a dress and the women who wore it. From March-October, 2009, Carlyle House will focus its interpretation on the women who lived there. The highlight of the exhibit will be the recreated 1747 wedding dress of Sarah Fairfax Carlyle and the 1795 dress made by her daughter, Sarah Carlyle Herbert.

Mount Vernon re-creates a lively early-American marketplace with demonstrations, crafts and entertainment at its 18th-Century Craft Fair. Colonial-attired artisans demonstrate 18th-century crafts and sell traditional wares. The event also features lively 18th-century entertainment including music, fire-eating, sword-swallowing, puppet and magic shows. Potomac River sightseeing cruises, courtesy of Spirit Cruises and Potomac Riverboat Company, are free-of-charge while supplies last.

Old Town Alexandria resident David A. Taylor, the author of "Soul of a People: The WPA Writers' Project Uncovers Depression America," will discuss The WPA Writers' Project in Virginia and talk about the process of making the 1930s Virginia guidebook and some of the surprises you find there. In the Great Depression, the WPA Writers' Project was one small part of FDR's New Deal, designed to put people back to work. This talk will look at the writers' experiences and their legacy now.

The Alexandria Symphony Orchestra is pleased to be opening its 2009-2010 season with guest pianist Carlos Rodriguez and guest violinist Leonid Sushansky. The season is "Inspired by Nature," and during the Sept. 26 concert, Sushansky will perform during Vivaldi's bright and playful "Summer" and "Autumn," selections from The Four Seasons. These two pieces were part of the ground-breaking work by The Red Priest where stanzas bring to mind flowing creeks, singing birds and buzzing mosquitoes. The orchestra will also play Respighi's "Pines of Rome." Rodriguez will close the evening with Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F. Tickets are $20-$80. Youth tickets (ages 8-18) are only $5!
