Although February is the shortest month of the year, there sure is a lot happening. Presidents Day as well as George Washington’s birthday is celebrated this month. Old Town Alexandria will host the largest George Washington Parade in the country on February 20th beginning at 1 p.m. This is a great time to celebrate our town as well as our first president. In our Personality Profile, writer Sylvia Winterling sat down with Alexandria’s own Mary Wiseman who portrays Martha Washington much of the year. Lori Welch carries politics into her Single Space column this month and talks about “Hearty Candidates”, quite an interesting read. Our Business Profile this month is newcomer to Alexandria, Cindy Sage and her new salon, Lulu sage. It is Valentines…time for a “new do”. Speaking of Valentine’s Day, you can either roll up our cover and give it as a bouquet, or better yet, take that special someone to one of the fine restaurants that you will find between our covers. Our Dining Out feature is Hank’s Oyster Bar-Old Town on King Street. Discover the wide selection of oysters as Charles Oppman takes you on a bivalve journey. With cold temps in January, I modified my Day Trip and flew to Ambergris Caye in Belize. The airfare was cheap, the weather warm, and the constant breeze cooling. This February marks the 12th month that I have written about what happened in the Civil War this month 150 years ago. Sarah Becker also enlightens us about Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his Inaugural address in February of 1862. February is also Black History Month and Bob O’Connor explores black history in Jefferson County, West Virginia. Happy Valentine’s Day to all of you, and we hope that you enjoy reading our publication, as much as we enjoy bringing it to you.
