Back when I was in my early 20’s my mother gave me a short article to read. It was all about following your dream, enjoy the moment, live today to the fullest for you don’t know what tomorrow will bring, etc., etc., etc. My Aunt said to my mother, “why should he read that, he is doing it!” Well, 40 some years later I still try and live life to the fullest, but maybe not the smartest. I never really thought of being a perfect person…just a good one. Hopefully, I make more people laugh than cry and that knowing me has been more of an adventure than a hardship.
So it is with our publication. Never meant to be perfect…just really good. Not for everyone, but certainly for most. We have been consistent, dependable, entertaining, informative and have established a sizable readership over the last 22 years. I guess that we do more things right than wrong. Certainly for everyone involved over the years, it has been an adventure.
Speaking of adventures, I accompanied photographer, Chester Simpson to one of his favorite escapes, Watermelon Park outside of Berryville, Virginia. What a beautiful place with an extraordinary history. If you are in wine country this month, check out our destination restaurants that dot the countryside. One of them, Grandale Farm Restaurant is our Dining Out feature. If you decide to come to Alexandria for dinner or lunch, come August 20-29 for Restaurant Week when you can find $35.00 menus of assorted offerings. See the ad in this issue. While in Alexandria, check out the shops featured in the Business Profile and on the “Summertime Sizzles” ad.
Lori Welch explores the waffly world of limbo in this months Single Space column while angler Steve Chaconas comments on the “catch and kill” edict on the invasive Snakehead fish in the Potomac River in his August Go Fish. While we are in somewhat of a drought here, Jamie Elliot writes of the constant rain in St. John in the Caribbean Connection. Great for the cisterns, but bad for sunbathing and sailing.
As we ride out this economic storm we will continue to bring you articles worth reading and advertising that is not only affordable, but reaches folks literally from the Bay to the Blue Ridge as well as St. John, USVI.
Stay Cool in these Dog Days of Summer!!
