The Jackson Clinics are well known in the Northern Virginia area; there are ten different locations that offer “handson physical therapy” to their patients. I had the opportunity to speak with the clinic owners, Anna and Richard Jackson to discuss the clinics’ current focus and future path. The medical arena is not my specialty, but I was impressed with both business owners and what they have built; I think you will be, as well.

After speaking with Anna and Richard Jackson, I can see that they are the epitome of a successful partnership. Not only are they focused on having a happy family and marriage, they are also both committed to the success of The Jackson Clinics. Their diversity as professionals makes them a strong team. Richard has been in the Physical Therapy field for over thirty years; the majority of his time was spent in private practice. He brings his wealth of skills and experience to this chain of clinics. Richard describes Anna as “a major force in the company and more than half of the reason the clinics are successful.” She is responsible for the business operations, human resources, and marketing aspects of The Jackson Clinics. The combination of professional physical therapy knowledge and a strong understanding of best business practices make this a winning team for the Jackson’s and their patients.

Another aspect of the clinic’s success is its mission. The Jackson Clinics are committed to offering “quality and consistency…professional excellence with a personal touch.” Richard focuses on the importance of consistency in regards to the ten different offices. It doesn’t matter if you are a patient at the Vienna clinic or the Alexandria clinic, the service will be top quality. Richard and Anna largely contribute this to their staff. I asked both of them, separately, what their favorite part of being business owners is; they both shared that it is the staff. Anna said that they “have 80 of the most outstanding, professional individuals.” Richard reiterated that he is impressed with the overwhelming dedication that the therapists have for their patients.

No thriving business comes without its challenges. The Jackson Clinics struggle with the challenge of maintaining quality care despite the rising cost of medical expenses and shrinking reimbursements rates. They struggle with these issues so that their patients don’t have to. Anna and Richard are focused on continuing to find efficiencies to reduce medical costs; for example, they switched to an electronic medical record system. Staying on top of the details and options allows the Jackson’s to focus on their patients’ health and not their insurance companies.

As far as the future goes, Anna and Richard want The Jackson Clinics to become the “go-to place for physical therapy in Northern Virginia.” They have already built the foundation for this reputation with their core values - consistency and quality. Their dedication to their patients and to the improvement and growth of their staff will help them to reach this goal.
